Michael Wansley aka ‘The Wanz’, a graduate of Central Washington University sang in the top vocal jazz choir under John Moawad (RIP) for 6 years. A dynamic performer, Wanz has spent much of his life singing anywhere, for anyone, at any time. Based in Seattle since 1986, Wanz has been in numerous groups from rock to funk to R&B, even two stints with The Seattle Opera’s performance of Porgy & Bess (2011, 2018)!
From 2000-2012, Wanz gained a reputation as a top notch studio vocalist, which led to chance meeting and session with local hip hop legends Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. His is the voice you hear singing, “I’m gonna pop some tags, only got 20 dollars in my pocket! I’m huntin’, lookin’ for a come-up, THIS IS F*#*ING AWESOME!!” on the 2013 worldwide smash, “Thrift Shop” which earned him 2 grammys (2014) and a Diamond Award (2015)!!
After leaving the tour in 2015, Wanz went back to being a software test engineer as well as writing, recording and producing his own music (#NDY – 2022). In 2024, he decided to go back to singing jazz not realizing how much he not only missed it but also how much he loved it!! Occasionally you can catch him at a couple of weekly ‘drop-in’ jazz nights in the north end.
